What reading and listening can support

Choose the format that helps the book enter your life.

The research does not support presenting listening as a lesser path. The clearest evidence concerns comprehension; evidence about social and long-term health outcomes is promising but more limited.

46 studies · 4,687 people

Reading and listening were broadly comparable.

A 2022 meta-analysis found no reliable overall difference in comprehension between the two formats. Self-paced reading showed a small advantage in some conditions.

91 adults · randomized study

The same pattern held after two weeks.

Immediate comprehension and two-week retention did not differ significantly among audiobook, e-text, and combined-format groups. Male and female participants recalled similar amounts across formats.

Shared reading created room for connection.

Eight facilitated groups for newly retired men in Denmark identified potential benefits for affective well-being, meaning-making, community, equality, and shared reflection.

Book reading was associated with longevity.

After adjustment for relevant characteristics, book readers had a 20% lower mortality risk than non-book readers. This was an association, not proof that reading caused the difference.

Evidence boundary: The shared-reading study is directly about men, specifically newly retired men in Denmark, and is qualitative. The comprehension and longevity studies include broader adult populations and should not be interpreted as male-specific effects. None of these findings promises an individual health outcome or replaces professional care.

The evidence

Men read widely. The invitation into community can grow.

Participation describes current behavior. Reading reveals the larger audience from which future circles may grow.

American men5%

Approximately one in twenty participated in a book club during the previous year.

American women10%

Approximately one in ten participated during the same period.

All American adults7%

Book club participation remains a focused national activity with room for expansion.

American male readers71%

More than seven in ten men read at least part of one print, electronic, or audio book.

What men report valuing

A smaller qualitative study of 130 frequent male readers aged 35 and older found that participating men commonly valued enjoyable discussion, varied selections, and perspectives from women and men. Men outside clubs often preferred mixed gender membership, a broad range of books, shared selection, and public meeting places.

The Pew survey included 8,046 American adults and reported a full sample margin of sampling error of ±1.7 percentage points. The male preference study was smaller, older, and limited to frequent readers aged 35 and above; it offers design guidance within that population.

Shared reading can support connection and meaning for newly retired men
Moderately confidentSupported by rich qualitative evidence from 53 men, but not a controlled causal estimate or a representative sample.
Book reading caused a 20% reduction in mortality
SpeculativeThe cohort found an adjusted association, not proof of causation; the site therefore does not make this causal claim.
Discussion, variety, and mixed perspectives appeal to participating men
Moderately confidentSupported by a smaller qualitative sample with limited national generalizability.
