Seven agreements for a thoughtful reading community
- Speak from personal experience and let each member interpret her own.
- Keep another member’s story within the community unless she gives clear permission to share it.
- Share only the depth that feels right and honor every member’s freedom to pass.
- Listen to understand and allow silence to remain part of the conversation.
- Ask before offering advice, prayer, resources, or personal contact.
- Leave room for many voices and return the conversation to the book when it drifts.
- Name authors, books, and sources clearly so readers can follow the ideas with confidence.
Keep community conversation general and de-identified
A reading community can hold meaningful reflection without collecting protected details. Members can describe the pattern, question, feeling, or insight while leaving out names, locations, workplaces, diagnoses, records, account details, and identifying circumstances.
Protected health, employment, financial, legal, client, student, patient, and other sensitive information belongs inside approved secure systems. When a story involves another person, share only what is necessary to illuminate your own learning.
Digital privacy also includes access care. Use a unique password, secure the device where drafts or journal exports live, and sign out or lock the portal on a shared device.
Respond in a way that preserves ownership
Begin by acknowledging what you heard: “The passage you chose carries a powerful question,” or “I hear how carefully you are holding this season.” Ask whether the member wants witnessing, a question, shared experience, or practical ideas.
Disagreement can remain connected to the text. Name the passage, explain your reading, and stay curious about the experiences that shape another interpretation. A moderator can redirect, pause, close a thread, or invite a private follow-up when the conversation needs care.
Reporting is an act of stewardship. Members should have a visible way to flag harassment, repeated boundary crossings, unsafe disclosure, impersonation, or content that conflicts with the community agreements.
